State Awards $5 Million to Reduce Homelessness

-

OLYMPIA, WA – Island, King, Snohomish, and Thurston counties. “Every family in Washington State deserves a safe and decent place to live” said Juli Wilkerson, CTED Director. “These projects will help reduce homelessness and move us closer to achieving the goals set forth in the state’s 10-Year plan to reduce homelessness.”

Funds were awarded from the Homeless Grant Assistance Program (HGAP). The program is designed to help implement the Washington State and county 10-year plans to address homelessness. HGAP seeks to support projects that reduce homelessness while demonstrating overall government costs savings through systems integration.

On any given day in our state, an estimated 22,000 people are homeless.

The innovative projects named today will closely measure the effectiveness of new models of systems integration between state and local government criminal justice, health and social service systems, and local non-profit homeless service providers. They are:

County Grant Amount Project Description
Grant $874,610 Grant County will implement a low-barrier housing first model to serve at least 25 high-needs households per year, providing services and support needed to achieve maximum self-sufficiency.
Island $630,741 Project Home Base will provide services and transitional housing to 45 people annually exiting from jail, hospitals, mental health or chemical dependency facilities.
King $833,333 Housing Foundations project will prevent homelessness through targeted interventions among 1,400 at-risk households annually, and will research the effectiveness of the interventions using a control group.
Snohomish $1,666,666 Project Anchor will leverage the existing single-point-of-entry system to assess client needs and provide different levels of homelessness prevention services to over 200 people per year.
Thurston $994,650 Empowering Change through Housing and Opportunities (ECHO) project will provide transitional housing and services to 22 high-risk youth annually existing correctional or court systems.
