Kilmer Urges Communities in the 6th District to Apply for Transportation Grants

TACOMA, Wash. – (RealEstateRama) — Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) urged transportation agencies in Washington’s 6th Congressional District to apply for a new round of Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) competitive grants. First established in 2009, TIGER funds local rail, road, and port projects with national significance.

The grants available this year, totaling $500 million, are awarded on a competitive basis to support critical investments in transportation infrastructure. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Kilmer fought to include investments in TIGER grants in the Fiscal Year 2016 Omnibus Appropriations Act – which Kilmer helped pass last December.

“TIGER grants help our transportation system keep pace with the needs of commuters – and our economy,” said Kilmer. “I’m proud to support this program as it helps our local communities with key projects from improving roads and bridges to building up transit in our region. Continuing to build up a safe and robust transportation infrastructure in our neck of the woods is essential for jobs, businesses that need to get their products to customers, and folks who are too often stuck in traffic.”

In the past, Washington state has received $229 million in TIGER grants to support 15 projects. These include the Tacoma LINK Expansion, Tacoma Trestle Replacement, and support for the Makah Tribe to develop an emergency response facility for potential oil spills.
