Vancouver, WA – April 9, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Two Clark County projects were recognized last week for excellence by the American Public Works Association’s Washington chapter.
Building a pedestrian bridge across Salmon Creek near Washington State University Vancouver won in the structures category for projects less than $5 million.
Replacing a partially collapsed culvert under Northeast Falls Road east of Yacolt took top honors in the disaster or emergency construction repair category for projects less than $5 million.
The Pleasant Valley Pedestrian Bridge connects WSU Vancouver with Pleasant Valley Community Park. Later this year, a contractor working for Clark County will build a trail along Northeast Salmon Creek Avenue to connect to the WSU Vancouver campus trail system. The project also will install a pedestrian-activated beacon to assist people in crossing Salmon Creek Avenue.
The culvert replacement, which was done during a single weekend last October, highlighted the county’s ability to move swiftly. Without prompt action, there was a significant risk the culvert would collapse completely. Had that happened, Weaver Creek could have backed up, washed out Falls Road and cut off the only road access for more than a dozen homes.
Last week’s awards marked the eighth time Clark County Public Works has received Project of the Year honors in the past seven years. Previous winners were:
• Sara Slide Stabilization in 2014.
• Luke Jensen Sports Park and Mount Vista Rain Gardens in 2013.
• Curtin Creek Enhancement Area in 2011.
• Buncombe Hollow Road Emergency Slide Stabilization in 2010.
• Klineline Bridge Replacement in 2009.
