Bipartisan Bill Would Create Tax Credit for Home Renovations for Multigenerational Living

-

Rep. Marilyn Strickland (D-WA) and Rep. David P. Joyce (R-OH) have introduced the bipartisan Multigenerational HOMES (Housing Opportunities for Modifying Existing Structures) Act. The bill would give homeowners a tax credit for renovating their homes to accommodate an elderly family member, a family member with a disability, or a live-in caregiver.

According to the sponsors, the credit could be used for modifications such as adding handrails, stairlifts, wider doorways and separate entrances. They said it is meant to make in-home caregiving for aging relatives more affordable for families who choose it. Strickland’s office described the bill as the first of its kind.

Joyce, a member of the Congressional Assisting Caregivers Today Caucus, said the bill would help families adapt existing homes to changing needs and make better use of the existing housing stock. He said it could also reduce the costs and pressures of finding additional housing.

The legislation is endorsed by AARP, Generations United, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. NAHB Chairman Bill Owens said the group commends the bill for helping families stay in their homes and keep loved ones together under one roof.

Why it matters

The bill is a proposal and has not become law. If enacted, homeowners making accessibility changes for relatives or caregivers could receive a tax credit, which may also be relevant for remodelers and builders.
