Murray, Larsen Press GSA to Restart Stalled Washington Border Station Projects

-

Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA) sent a letter to General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Edward Forst asking the agency to prioritize construction of two stalled Washington state border station projects: the Kenneth G. Ward Land Port of Entry in Lynden and the Sumas Land Port of Entry. They sent it on September 22 and have not received a response from GSA.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021 provided $3.4 billion to modernize 26 land ports of entry nationwide. As of August 12, 2026, GSA has temporarily prevented nine of those projects from moving forward, including the two in Washington, according to the lawmakers.

They wrote that the projects matter for trade and the local economy and that delays would affect the supply chain and labor market. They said modernization will affect several existing buildings in Sumas’s downtown core and that Lynden is preparing for additional commercial traffic. Murray and Larsen asked GSA to prioritize the two projects when it reassesses the remaining nine in the coming months.

Why it matters

City officials and property owners in Sumas and Lynden are waiting on timelines that affect downtown buildings and local development plans.
