Vancouver, WA – October 8, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Clark County manages household hazardous waste programs that have collected more than 35 million pounds of waste. You can help increase that total at a special collection event this Saturday.
Local residents may drop off block foam, electronic waste and household hazardous waste from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Clark County Public Works Operations Center, 4700 N.E. 78th St.
To highlight the county’s strong commitment to waste management, the North America Hazardous Materials Management Association recently presented its Longstanding Program Excellence award to Clark County’s Environmental Services department.
“It’s gratifying to see the county recognized for its emphasis on proper disposal,” said Jim Mansfield, sustainability specialist with Clark County Environmental Services. “Helping residents dispose of these common products correctly is one of the ways Clark County protects and enhances our natural environment.”
Clark County’s household hazardous waste program began in 1986 with annual collection events. These events were held until 1992 when the first facility for household hazardous waste was opened. Also in 1992, the county’s recycling program started collecting used oil and household batteries at the curb.
The county currently has three permanent facilities for household hazardous waste; 18 businesses and other locations for unwanted medications; and five retailers for paint and related materials.
Certain types of foam are not accepted at collection events: packing peanuts, foam hot tub covers, soft squishy foam and plastic-wrapped yellow urethane foam. Other materials must be in original containers and labeled appropriately.
Household hazardous waste collection programs are sponsored by Clark County, local cities and the Washington State Department of Ecology. For additional information, call Environmental Services at (360) 397-2121 ext. 4352 or visit RecyclingA-Z.com.
